We are so thankful! – Photos from Open House and Grateful Gobbler

November 28, 2009

Our first Thanksgiving at the House at Serenity Pointe has been a joyful one! We were blessed with the good company of our friends and supporters on Nov. 7 for our Open House. Then on Thanksgiving Day, we joined thousands of people from all around the area for the Grateful Gobbler, Chattanooga’s annual walk for the homeless. Here are some photos!

Upstairs renovations are finished!

September 2, 2009

It’s the final countdown! We’ve finished work upstairs, and we’ve got a day or two of work left on the downstairs addition. Pictures coming soon!

We’d like to take a moment and thank some people we forgot to mention before. (We have had so much help from so many, it’s hard to keep track!)

  • Smith’s Tree Service in Dunlap for helping us with a huge tree that had to be removed.
  • All About Storage in Dunlap for lending us an onsite unit for storing materials.
  • Terry Gilbert of Whitwell for a camcorder.
  • The Bouffant Salon in Dunlap for free kids haircuts (which we gave away at Give a Kid a Chance).
  • Johnita Jones of Hixson for the washer-dryer.
  • Greg Underwood of Pikeville for more household items than we have room to mention.
  • Amy Swafford of So. Pittsburg for two sets of twin mattresses.
  • Betty Vinson of Tuscaloosa for $8,000 worth of excavating and landscaping work.

We’re also making progress on our Wish List, but there’s still plenty of opportunity for you to pitch in. Click here to see the updated list. Thank you for your prayers and support!

Powell’s Crossroads Church of God gets hands-on at Serenity Pointe

August 26, 2009

We’re racing to the finish at the Serenity Pointe house! On Saturday we were blessed to have help from some of our friends from Powell’s Crossroads Church of God. Jody Bales and Mark Lofty helped trim the downstairs addition, while Austin, Cody, and Terry tackled the front yard. On Sunday, Debbie and Gerald returned the visit, speaking to the congregation during the morning service.

Light fixtures and cabinets! Paint and tile!

August 21, 2009

This is it, folks! The home stretch! We are so close to finishing renovations at The House. The downstairs addition has been painted and tiled. We’re installing light fixtures, bathroom fixtures, cabinets, and electrical switches this very moment. Meanwhile, we’re assembling furniture for the upstairs bedrooms and getting ready to tackle the kitchen.

As we race ever closer to the finish line, we continue to be overwhelmed by the generosity of our friends and neighbors. We owe big-time thanks to:

Billy Joe Ladd of Ladd’s Painting for painting the downstairs addition!

Jerry Geer for the lovely tile work!

Hamilton Hearing of Soddy Daisy for donating twin beds, chests, and TVs.

Crown Plumbing of Dunlap for doing all our plumbing for free.

Grandview Medical Center for donating a treasure-chest of travel-size toiletries.

The Habitat for Humanity reStore for selling us light fixtures and furniture at way-lower-than-bargain-basement prices.

Belinda Price-Margison of Margison Interiors in Rossville for giving us two twin beds!

And of course we remain deeply grateful to the trustees who come to us from the Sequatchie County Justice Center. They are truly a blessing. We could not do this without them.

Your support is needed now more than ever! We have just nine days left to meet our emergency fundraising goal for August. Several local congregations have stepped up to help meet the growing need in our community. If you have been thinking about giving to Serenity Pointe but haven’t quite gotten around to it yet, now is the time! Find out how you can contibute by visiting our website.

Please keep us in your prayers, and check back soon for more pictures and updates!

Drywall’s almost done! (and Thank You, John Smith of Decatur, Tenn.)

July 29, 2009

We’re deeply grateful to John Smith of Decatur, Tenn., for donating his time to help us finish the drywall in the emergency housing wing. He’s done a fabulous job (and you should see him walk around on that bucket!). Thanks to his efforts, and the continuing efforts of the trustees from the Sequatchie County Justice Center, we’re getting closer and closer to completion. With the drywall up, you really get a feel for how the emergency housing wing will look when it’s finished!

Thank You, James Countertops of Hixson!

July 29, 2009

A big thank you to James Tanner of James Countertops, who has donated kitchen cabinets and countertops. We can’t wait to install them in kitchenette of the newly renovated emergency housing wing!

Sequatchie Co. trustees lend a big hand to Serenity Pointe

July 27, 2009

Serenity Pointe is deeply grateful to a very special group of folks: trustees from the Sequatchie County Justice Center. These men, inmates who have earned the opportunity to work outside the jail, have become an invaluable part of our team.

Many of them have specialized skills that would be hard to find otherwise. They have helped us build walkways and walls, finish the basement, paint, collect materials, and anything else we ask of them. They are hard-working team players who have taken Serenity Pointe’s mission to heart, and we could not do this without them.

Our sincere thanks to Bro. Leonard Sutherland, chaplain at the Justice Center, for administering this wonderful trustee program, which has provided hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of labor to local nonprofit organizations like Serenity Pointe.

Local artist brings the walls of Serenity Pointe to life!

July 27, 2009

We’re delighted to have artist Melanie Villegas of Tracy City helping us turn the Serenity Pointe house into a true home. Melanie has been hard at work painting inspirational murals and inscriptions on the walls of the bedrooms.

Check out some of her beautiful work in these photos. (If some or all of the photos don’t appear, try refreshing the page.)

Thank You, Jerry Shelby, Jerry Geer, and S&M Materials!

July 27, 2009

As our renovations continue, so does the generosity of our community. We’d like to thank:

  • S&M Materials on Amnicola in Chattanooga for providing us with sheetrock at cost.
  • Jerry Shelby of Soddy Daisy for finishing the sheetrock for us.
  • Jerry Geer of Signal Mountain for installing heating and air vents for the basement.
